Backup quarterback Dylan Thompson completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Bruce Ellington with 11 seconds remaining as South Carolina stunned Michigan 33-28 in the Outback Bowl this afternoon at Raymond James Stadium.
The Gamecocks converted a fourth-and-3 on the drive when starting quarterback Connor Shaw found Ace Sanders for 6 yards to the South Carolina 43. Sanders, a former Bradenton Manatee High School star, scored three times.
The victory gave South Carolina back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time in school history and head coach Steve Spurrier a victory in his first-ever meeting against Michigan.
Two of the best teams in the country are meeting for the 2013 Outback Bowl, and fans of the Michigan Wolverines and the South Carolina Gamecocks can’t wait to see them clash at Raymond James Stadium this New Year’s Day at 1:00pm! It’s old-school SEC defense meets a Big Ten-style grinding offense.
The University of South Carolina placed three players on the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman squad as selected by the 14 head football coaches, the league office announced today.
Earning spots on the squad were tight end Jerell Adams, offensive tackle Brandon Shell and defensive back T.J. Gurley.
Adams, a 6-5, 224-pound true freshman from Pinewood, S.C. caught four passes for 90 yards, an average of 22.5 yards per reception, with one touchdown in eight games. His touchdown reception came from 29 yards out in the win over Arkansas.
Shell, a 6-6, 331-pound redshirt freshman from Goose Creek, S.C. started nine games during the season, including the final eight at right tackle. He was also the starting left tackle in the season opener at Vanderbilt.
Gurley, a 5-10, 183-pound true freshman from Cairo, Ga., played in eight games including a pair of starts (Missouri and Florida) before suffering a season-ending knee injury at Florida. He logged 13 tackles, including eight solo stops.
The South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Clemson Tigers 27-17 at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina on Saturday night, before a crowd of more than 82,000 fans. It marked the fourth straight season that South Carolina had beaten their arch-rivals.
Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier picked up his 65th career win at USC to become the winningest football coach in school history, surpassing Rex Enright.
Back-up quarterback Dylan Thompson, filling in for Connor Shaw who sprained his foot last week against Wofford, threw for three touchdowns, and Jadeveon Clowney had four and a half sacks in the Gamecocks victory. Clowney has 13 sacks this year to set a Gamecocks single-season record.
The 2012 season hasn’t gone as planned for either the No.13 team in the country, the South Carolina Gamecocks (6-2, 4-2 SEC), or the Tennessee Volunteers (3-4, 0-4 SEC).
South Carolina watched its hopes of both a SEC Championship and a National Championship vanish last week after losing its second conference game in a row, a 44-11 thumping courtesy of the No. 2 Florida Gators in Gainesville.
Tennessee was equally embarrassed at the hands of No. 1 Alabama, a 44-13 drubbing that not only marked the Volunteers’ third consecutive loss of the season, but their fourth loss in the past five games.
One team’s fortune is going to change when the two meet on Saturday afternoon.

Steve Spurrier has accepted South Carolina won’t win a Southeastern Conference title this year. He’s now focused on making sure the Gamecocks’ two-game slide doesn’t grow this week against Tennessee.
It’s a huge comedown from a couple of weeks ago when anything was possible for undefeated South Carolina, 6-0 and ranked No. 3 after a 35-7 dismantling of Georgia.
But the Gamecocks (4-2 SEC) wilted in top-10 showdown losses at LSU, 23-21, and at Florida, 44-11.

The game will include two top-10 teams, ESPN’s College GameDay on location in Gainesville and the return of Gator legend Steve Spurrier. This is just the seventh time in school history that South Carolina (6-1, 4-1 SEC) has entered a game ranked in the top 10 and playing another top-10 opponent — but the third time in as many weeks. South Carolina is 1-5 in those games. Florida is 6-0 for the eighth time in school history and 5-0 in the league. South Carolina enters the game with a two-game winning streak over the Gators, but in 32 meetings Florida has never lost three in a row to the Gamecocks.
Watch out for …
This was supposed to be a showcase battle between Florida RB Mike Gillislee and South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore — two of the SEC’s best. But Lattimore has a bruised his hip and is questionable. His value? USC has never lost when he has at least 20 carries. If he can’t go, the Gamecocks have capable backups, but it puts more pressure on QB Connor Shaw and the passing game. Florida has relied more on the run than the arm of QB Jeff Driskel, who threw just 20 passes last week, but the Gators insist they aren’t one-dimensional and can break out the passing game if necessary.
Justin McKie, a 6-foot-3 guard that live in Columbia, SC, committed to the Gamecocks over the weekend.
“It feels real good to finally say I’ve committed to play at a high level, which is one of things I’ve always wanted to do,” McKie told Gamecock Anthem. “I’m excited to be a Gamecock!” McKie is the son of former Gamecock guard BJ McKie, also known as South Carolina’s all-time leading scorer and a player who has had his number retired by the program. “I don’t feel any pressure. My dad was a great player at USC, but now it’s time for me to show what I can do,” McKie said. “[South] Carolina has always been in my blood. I remember going to games when they had a lot of success, and I want to get them back to that point.”
Hopefully, Justin’s teams have more success than his dad’s; BJ was a member of the 1997 club that lost as a No. 2 seed to Coppin State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Justin had also received interest from programs like Murray State and Wichita State.

The South Carolina Gamecocks are ranked No. 3 in this week’s AP Poll and I could not be happier. Simply put, it is “Great to be a Gamecock.”
It has been a long road for the USC football team and for fans of the program. This is the best ranking in the “Steve Spurrier era” and the second-highest ranking in school history; South Carolina reached the No. 2 spot in 1984. This weekend in Columbia, SC will mark the 60th meeting between the ‘Cocks and Dawgs on the football field. This match-up might be in the biggest in the history of the game with both teams being ranked in the top 10 and both being undefeated. Georgia has been an offensive force so far this season, leading the SEC in scoring offense with 48.2 points per game and total offense with 536 yards per game. The Dawgs defense has also looked good this season only giving up 22 points per game and 370 yards per game. USC is also entering the game with good offensive and defensive numbers so this game has “SEC Classic” written all over it. Continue reading
University of South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw has a streak to extend when the Gamecocks take on SEC opponent Kentucky Saturday night in Lexington.
Last week against Missouri, Shaw completed 20 straight passes to set a school record and tie for second in the SEC milestone. Although he failed to connect on his first pass of the game, Shaw completed 20 of 21 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns in the Gamecocks 31-10 win over the Tigers at Williams-Brice Stadium.
