(Sports) Dude Really?! Michigan State Recruit Turns Down Scholarship…For WHAT?!

IFWT_Jay-Harris-3

As a signee for a major Division I football program, Jay Harris was no slouch on the field. A standout wide receiver for Exton (Pa.) Downington East High, Harris was expected to contribute for the Michigan State Spartans in some capacity as a freshman. Now he won’t even be on the team, because he decided to follow another dream.

In what can only be described as a major surprise, not to mention a particularly unique twist, Harris had his scholarship to Michigan State rescinded after he posted the explicit rap video you see above to YouTube. In the course of a 3:26 span, Harris rhymes about having sex, smoking illegal drugs and being awesome at life in general.

While losing a Division I football scholarship would seem like a particularly traumatic experience for an athletic 18-year-old, Harris took the entire incident in stride. In fact, it appeared he had made a clear choice to chase rap stardom over a future on the field, telling the Philadelphia Inquirer that his move from the gridiron to full-time rap had been held up in the past by his lack of courage, not any indecision.

“I’ve always had this in the back of my head, but never had the courage to tell my parents that this is what I want to do,” Harris told the Inquirer.

(Sports) Mark Cuban Would Give Brittney Griner A Chance With Mavs?!

griner

Yea, she’s that good.  Brittney Griner dominated women’s college basketball and Mark Cuban has taken notice.  Check out what he had to say about the star & let us know what you think about it…

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would be willing to give Baylor women’s star Brittney Griner the opportunity to prove she could play in the NBA.

Cuban said he would consider selecting Griner, a 6-foot-8 three-time All-American and Big 12 player of the year, in the second round of the NBA draft. If the Mavs don’t draft her, Cuban said he would have “no problem whatsoever” inviting Griner to try out for a spot on Dallas’ summer league team.

“If she is the best on the board, I will take her,” Cuban said before the Mavs’ Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. “I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.”

Griner dominated women’s college basketball with her size and athleticism, scoring 3,283 points and blocking 748 shots in her career. She also had 18 dunks, including 11 her senior season.

Griner would love the opportunity. “I would hold my own! Lets do it.” she wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night in response to Cuban.

A woman trying out for an NBA team is not unprecedented. Former UCLA star Ann Meyers tried out for the Indiana Pacers in 1979.

Cuban said it’s difficult to evaluate whether Griner could play in the NBA because of the caliber of her competition, comparing it to scouting players from small schools. However, Cuban said he was absolutely serious about at least extending an invitation for Griner to try out this summer.

“She’d still have to make the team,” Cuban said. “I’m not going to carry her just to carry her. I don’t think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to giving her the opportunity.”

Cuban acknowledged that Griner playing in the NBA’s Las Vegas summer league would have tremendous marketing potential.

“It would, wouldn’t it? See how she could do?” Cuban said. “That’d sell out a few games.”

(Sports) Video: Louisville Cruises To Emotional Victory

Despite the injury, brave Kevin Ware called to his teammates to “win the game, win the game”. Ware, a guard with the Louisville Cardinals, landed awkwardly during yesterday’s game against Duke University and broke his leg in two places. It is being dubbed one of the sport’s worst injuries EVER with coach Rick Pitino saying “I’ve not seen that in my life”.

Ware’s best friend on the team, Chane Behanan, collapsed to his knees and looked like he was going to be sick. He said: “The bone was literally out. I saw white, it was literally out. I’ve never seen anything like that. I don’t remember the last time I cried.”

The horrified crowd fell silent and some of Ware’s teammates cried when they saw the gruesome injury. Medics rushed onto the court and covered his leg with towels due to the graphic nature of the break. CBS, the US television channel showing the game, had to stop showing replays of the nasty fall.

After the accident, Ware’s team went more than three-minutes without scoring but went on to win the match 85-63.

Mr Pitino said: “We won this for him.”

(Sports) March Madness:(Video) Harvard Pulls Off One Of The Biggest Upsets Ever

dm_130322_new_sc

Harvard made history last night in more ways than one. The school that you think of when you picture doctors, judges, politicians, is now producing some quality basketball as well. Harvard won their first game ever in the history of the NCAA tournament last night, and they did it in dramatic fashion by upsetting highly ranked University of New Mexico 68-62 in the second round. New Mexico was the #3 seed in the bracket, while Harvard was seeded #14. It is an amazing feat for Harvard considering the 2 best players on the team were dismissed before the season started for an academic fraud situation. Many people had New Mexico making a very deep run in the tournament, but the smart kids at Harvard had something to say about it. They held New Mexico to one of their lowest shooting performances of the season, while hitting more than half of their shots themselves. These type of games are what the NCAA tournament is all about.

(Sports) March Madness:(Video) Marquette Avoids Huge Upset With Last Second Shot

IFWT_marquette

Marquette University avoided a very big upset loss by hitting a layup at the buzzer to defeat Davidson 59-58 yesterday in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Marquette, the #3 seed in that bracket, was a heavy favorite over #14 seeded Davidson, but they got all they could handle from the underdogs. Survive and advance are the only 2 words that matter during this tournament.

The championship was locked up by halftime. By the time the confetti landed, Alabama was already looking ahead to the next one.

Quieting the Irish on the very first drive, Eddie Lacy, AJ McCarron and the No. 2 Crimson Tide rolled top-ranked Notre Dame, 42-14, for the BCS championship Monday night, locking up a second straight national title and third in four years with another laugher of a title game. The Bear would’ve been especially proud of this one, with Nick Saban and the Tide romping to the second-biggest rout of the BCS era that began in 1999.

“The process is ongoing,” said Saban, still tightlipped as ever and showing little emotion after the fourth national title of Continue reading

(Sports) Coach Suspended & Fined $50K!! For What?

Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice was suspended for 3 games and fined $50K by the University Thursday. This is coming directly from the school and not the NCAA itself. The school said the fine and suspension were due to a violation by the coach of the athletic department policy. After a little more digging it appears it has to do with the way he may of been talking and acting towards players in practice.

(Sports) #PAUSE 2012 Heisman Trophy Finalists Announced

ESPN announced the three players who will be heading to New York for the most prestigious award in college football .  The presentation takes place this Saturday, Dec. 8th at Best Buy Theatre in Times Square.  It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but check out who made the list…

Johnny Manziel, the redshirt freshman quarterback from Texas A&M,  Manti Te’o, Notre Dame’s star linebacker, along with Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein, were invited Monday to attend the Heisman presentation ceremony.

Manziel is the favorite to win college football’s most famous player of the year award on Saturday night in Manhattan. He would be the first freshman to win the Heisman and the first Texas A&M player since halfback John David Crow won the school’s only Heisman in 1957.

(Sports) Gamecocks Beat Clemson 4th straight year

The South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Clemson Tigers 27-17 at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina on Saturday night, before a crowd of more than 82,000 fans. It marked the fourth straight season that South Carolina had beaten their arch-rivals.

Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier picked up his 65th career win at USC to become the winningest football coach in school history, surpassing Rex Enright.

Back-up quarterback Dylan Thompson, filling in for Connor Shaw who sprained his foot last week against Wofford, threw for three touchdowns, and Jadeveon Clowney had four and a half sacks in the Gamecocks victory. Clowney has 13 sacks this year to set a Gamecocks single-season record.

(Sports) Grinnell College’s Jack Taylor Scores NCAA Record 138 points

“It felt like anything I tossed up was going in,” Taylor said afterward, which suggests he’s not too concerned about the 56 shots he actually missed in this game. The 5-foot-10 sophomore from Wisconsin finished 52-of-108 from the field and 27-of-71 from 3-point range – Yes, Taylor really did launch 71 3-pointers – in 36 minutes. He has now scored 185 points in three games this season, meaning Taylor is averaging — ready for this? — 61.7 points per game for the Division-III school in Iowa known for its exciting style of play featuring a constant full-court press and really, really fast-paced attack.

Taylor scored his 100th point with a little more than eight minutes remaining while teammate Griffin Lentsch — who scored a then-Division-III-record 89 points a mere 366 days ago — finished with only seven. Meantime, David Larson scored 70 for Faith Baptist Bible. That’s not bad. But it’s not 138, either.

(Sports) SCSU Bulldogs End Season With Win Over Tigers

The South Carolina State Bulldogs (5-6 overall, 4-4 MEAC) close out the regular season with a, 27-13 victory over Savannah State (1-10, 0-8 MEAC) Saturday at Dawson Stadium/Jeffries Field. South Carolina State saluted and honored 17 seniors who played their final home game against Savannah State on the day.

Red-shirt junior quarterback Richard Cue (6-1, 180) finished with 214 yards pass throwing 14-of-33-2 for two touchdowns in the victory. Freshman Tamarrick Hemingway (6-5, 210) led the receiving corps with five catches for 81 yards.

The Bulldogs defense was spearheaded by senior linebacker Cortney Ingram (5-10, 190) with 10 tackles to close out his career. Sophomore’s Andrew Carter (6-1, 240) and Justin Hughes (6-1, 220) each added 10 tackles, two sacks, and two tackles for loss on the day.

“First I would like to thank those seniors who played their heart out for SC State, this football team, and our coaches and me,” said SC State head coach Buddy Pough. “We when thru some things this year that we are not accustomed to, but we made it thru the storm.”
