The lingering questions about the Heat’s future have been focused far beyond this season. In particular, whether Riley can keep this team together when the luxury tax penalties become much stiffer starting in 2013-14.
“It’s doable in this tax economy, but I’ll leave that up to [Heat owner] Micky [Arison],” Riley said with a laugh. “That will all be tackled after the season, but it is doable.”
In other words, the ball is in Arison’s hands. Just like the Heat president planned ahead years in advance of the summer of 2010, Riley said he has already had internal conversations with Heat brass about how to financially keep the star-studded core intact when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh can all opt out of their contracts after the 2013-14 season.
“I don’t believe that we have to sell anybody on us anymore in 2014,” Riley said. “It’s all about winning now and when that time comes, we’ll deal with it.”
But the financial burden will begin starting in 2013-14 when taxpaying teams will have to pay $1.50 for every dollar they’re over the luxury tax line. And it gets considerably more punitive in 2014-15 when the repeater penalties hit and the tax rate increases the deeper a team is into the tax. Additionally, taxpaying teams will have more stringent roster management restrictions, including the inability to acquire players via sign-and-trades.
“It’s going to take that kind of revenue and those kinds of opportunities to be able to [keep the core together],” Riley said. “It is doable, but it’s a question of the economics of the game. There’s going to have to be some strategic planning not only from [the business] standpoint, but also personnel-wise over the next couple of years to deal with [the potential tax penalties].”

“I don’t know if he’ll be ready,” Brown said after the Lakers 97-91 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. “So yeah, I guess there is question. I’m just going to wait for [Lakers trainer] Gary Vitti to tell me he can play because there’s nothing I can do about it until they release him anyway.”
Bryant sat out of Wednesday’s game and has already been ruled out of Thursday’s exhibition finale in San Diego against the Sacramento Kings. According to a team spokesman, he spent most of Wednesday’s game getting treatment on his foot in the training room, and did not come out to the Lakers bench during the game.
Bryant’s injury is classified as a strain, and the team is officially saying he is out indefinitely. However, Bryant reported some improvement in his foot to team officials prior to Wednesday’s shootaround.
A 17-year veteran, Bryant missed several practices earlier in training camp because of discomfort in the same right foot. However sources told ESPNLosAngeles.com Wednesday night that this injury is a different injury, in a different place on his right foot, and is considerably more painful.
Bryant was injured this time when he tripped over Thomas Robinson’s foot in the third quarter of Sunday’s 99-92 loss to the Sacramento Kings.
Bad news for Ravens fans. The Baltimore Ravens improved to 5-1 on Sunday but lost way more than they gained as both linebacker Ray Lewis and cornerback Lardarius Webb will miss the remainder of the season, coach John Harbaugh confirmed Monday. Continue reading →
The countdown is on till the beginning of the NBA season and each player is getting prepared. The greatest show on TV premiers its third season tonight at 9pm on HBO. Boardwalk Empire. If you like any of the following movies, you will love Boardwalk Empire: Scarface, Goodfellas, Heat, Casino, Carlitos Way, The Departed. Boardwalk Empire has created some already notorious and notable characters from Nucky Thompson (the absolutely ruthless & crafty politician/gangster who makes most of his bread bootlegging liquor and don’t mind murkin’ a mufucka every now and then if necessary) Chalky White (the thick faced, take-no-shit-from-no-man country boy from the south who moved north to provide a better life for his family.) Arnold Rothstein, the very intelligent, cool and calculating Jewish gangster from New York who favors making money over murder. And lets not forget about Margaret Schroeder, the Irish ride-or-die bitch for Nucky who smashed the homie, gave away millions of dollars worth of Nucky’s land and still stands to tell about about it……well, at least up until season 3. Because its one thing we learned in the season 2 finale: NOBODY IS SAFE on Boardwalk Empire!! Anybody can get murked. RIP Jimmy.
