(Sports) Josh Smith Won’t Sign Contract Extension With the Hawks This Season

The last year of Josh Smith’s contract with the Atlanta Hawks is steadily approaching.  Original reports stated that the Hawks hadn’t offered Smith an extension and that was causing tension within the camp.  However a report from the New York Daily News says it’s Smith who won’t sign the extension but will opt to become a free agent.

Josh Smith has told the Hawks that he isn’t going to sign an extension during the season. He’d rather wait to become a free agent, when he can get a five-year deal. An extension would limit him to a three-year deal, according to the new CBA rules. New GM Danny Ferry has upwards of 10 players who could be free agents at season’s end.

(Sports) Former Raider Charged With Four Murders & Faces the Death Penalty

Anthony Wayne Smith, the 11th overall pick in the 1990 NFL draft who spent eight years with the Raiders, has been ordered to stand trial for four murders and could face the death penalty.

A Los Angeles County judge ruled after a four-day preliminary hearing that there is sufficient evidence for the 45-year-old Smith to stand trial. All four murder charges will be part of one trial, and the charges make him eligible for the death penalty, although the prosecution has not decided whether to pursue it. Continue reading

(Sports) J.R. Smith is Tired of Being a Sixth Man, Wants to Start For the Knicks

He has a good chance, because free-agent signee Ronnie Brewer had knee surgery in early September and won’t start practicing for two weeks. Iman Shumpert, incumbent starter at shooting guard, may not be back until January as he rehabs from ACL surgery. The shooting guard position is Smith’s for the taking. (Sports) Torrey Smith Scores Two Ravens Touchdowns Not Long After Brother, Tevin, Dies

Torrey Smith showed up at the stadium tired and drained, unsure if he would suit up for the Baltimore Ravens. No one would have blamed him if he didn’t. After all, his younger brother had died in a motorcycle accident less than 24 hours earlier.Smith opted to play, and the second-year wide receiver caught touchdown passes of 25 and 5 yards to help the Ravens beat the New England Patriots 31-30 Sunday night in a rematch of the AFC title game. Tevin Jones, 19, died late Saturday night in Virginia. Smith left the team hotel at 1 a.m. Sunday and spent much of the day with his family before heading back to Baltimore.

(Sports) Steve Smith Rips Into Cam Newton

Smith said he was upset when Newton sat sulking on the bench instead of getting up to watch backup Derek Anderson and trying to learn from his own mistakes.

As a team captain and the elder statesman of the team, Smith felt something needed to be said to the 23-year old Newton about the importance of remaining positive and better handling adversity.

“I don’t want to be passive and not do it because if I don’t do it, who will?” Smith said. “The same way with my son, I can’t expect somebody else (to do that). So yeah, I lit into Continue reading

(Sports) JR Smith Thinks Tracy McGrady Can Help the Knicks

Earlier this week, Yahoo! reported that Tracy McGrady was working out for the New York Knicks. Some met the news with skepticism—does T-Mac have anything left in the tank?—but not NYK shooting guard JR Smith, who says he’d love to play alongside the veteran swingman.

(Sports) Ohio State: Smith Crazy One Hand Catch

The Buckeyes’ first touchdown of the 2012 season was a high-flying, one-handed grab in the right end of the end zone by Smith. Mad hops, concentration and a sick catch. This is not a bad way to start a new era at Ohio State even if there is no postseason at the end of it.

And the touchdown snapped the Buckeyes out of a funk that saw them trail Miami-Ohio 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.   Ohio State won 56-10.

(News) Columbia SC Woman Found Dead Last Week Has Been Identified

Richland County, SC (WLTX) – The Richland County Coroner’s office has identified the woman that deputies say was killed at a home in Northeast Columbia Thursday.

Coroner Gary Watts says the victim is 26-year-old Almanita L. Smith.

Smith was found dead outside her home on Heron Glen Drive in the Lake Shore subdivision around 7 a.m. Monday.  According to Watts, it appears the woman had been dead for several days before she was placed in the front yard.

An exact cause of death hasn’t been released, but Watts says the death appears to be an act of homicidal violence.

Deputies have arrested her boyfriend and charged him with murder in connection with her death.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says the story and explanation that her boyfriend is offering is inconsistent with the forensic and investigative evidence that has been recovered. He also classifies it as a case of domestic violence.
